SOMEWHERE IN THE ABYSS | La mostra

Somewhere in the abyss

The exhibition is a series of works of art representing the abyss of the sea. These depths were the habitat of the sperm whale Siso, the central feature of the museum founded and directed by the biologist Carmelo Isgrò. The works created by RE specifically for MUMA have a double genesis, conceptually and materially, as they are inspired by the notions of Ecosophy (environmental, social and mental ecology) and are made with two techniques invented by the artist: one using a unique type of paper created from common advertising flyers and the other by assembling, without combustion, commonly used plastic items that were recovered from beaches or supplied by companies, commercial activities and citizens of Milazzo. The artist has thus involved the entire community in a process not of mere recycling but of collective action that uses creativity to spread and raise awareness on environmental issues. The theme of the sea and its abysses has been developed by RE since 2015. She has created a series of works that materialize not only the sensations and emotions one feels going underwater but also the atavistic fears of humanity towards the unknown that exists at the bottom of the sea as well as within each of us. It is an immersion to an unknown place, in many ways, and at the same time a dive into the source of life.
